What a week!

Well, what a week! I worked my arse off all week only to find out that the show this weekend at the Tailor's Gallery was cancelled. But not to worry, I still got a lot done for the show at South Hill Park on the 19th and 20th of Nov. You might recall that this is my first big show so I have to build up a lot of stock, and I really really want to make a good impression!

Also the BIG MOVE has been causing stress and worry in
the Castaño household of late. The big dream of the big move has been a bit of an eye opener to how content we are with the current situation. We will be giving up comfortable successful jobs and a nice home to up sticks and Mr Castaño has been stressing. Only a few weeks to go now until the move. We need to find somewhere to live! Here's hoping it won't be a big fat c@&ck up!

In the mean time here are some pictures of bits I have been doing in the studio over the school half term...

See you next week.

Inspired by....

I am struggling along trying to build up enough for the shows I have coming up. I made a pot today that I realised it is very similar to the work of one of my favourite Potters http://magdaleneodundo.com/

Her work

My new pot...

Quite similar, however I think Odundo's work is far superior. Just thought I would share that little moment with you!

By the way. I got the job!!

If you didn't read my last post, I was in the land of worry. My husband had been given a new job in a fantastic school by the sea (we are planning to relocate from the city to the sea) I was waiting for am interview to see if I would also get a part time teaching post specialising in ceramics and photography which are my two areas (of course ceramics is my favourite favourite!).

So the deal is double done. We are moving to the sea. I don't mean to sound ungrateful for all the luck we had getting two jobs so close to each other in a pretty corner of England..... But it is all so soon. John (my husband) is also struggling to get him head around our fast approaching new life away from old londinium. only 6 weeks until we move.

But in between now and then I have 4 show to make for and a full time teaching job, so I best get busy!

See you next week

Times they are a changing!

I am off for an interview for a part time job in Eastbourne tomorrow. We are going to make the big move to the sea whether I get it or not. The deal is done.

This will mean more time for the ceramics which will be brilliant. I seem to be getting more shows and things now and I need time to build up stock. I have been beavering away this weekend and these are the fruits of my labour in preparation for the show in November....

And finally me in a very serious posing picture, peering from behind my pot!

A show, a show!!

Hello all, hope you have had a jolly week.

My husband and I have been in Eastbourne on the south coast of England this weekend. We are considering relocating to the sea. Chasing the 'dream'. We are both applying for new teaching posts. (mine part time so i can concentrate more on my ceramics). The odds are against us I think, we need two new jobs and a lovely new home in a welcoming and friendly community that are forgiving of city types relocating to the countryside, a lot of things need to be at least partly right for it to work.

The reality of leaving London is much scarier than I thought. On one hand we are renting so there is no substantial financial risk. If it goes tits up we can always come back to london with our tails between our legs. No big deal. But still... new jobs, (if we both get jobs that is) new town new house. A lot could go wrong. BUT it is the dream. And we have to try it, one life, one very short life, if I die with out trying I will regret it. This time next week I will know if john got the job, and probably know if my application has been successful. I will keep you posted.

Back to the title of this post. New show, my first BIG show, please come along if you can, visit my stand say hello, tell me what you think.

Jewellery Line

I have been developing a line of handmade porcelain jewelery. Each piece is totally unique. They are made as a development from my bigger sculptural pieces. They have been well received so far, I have sold a few and there has been a few comments and inquiries. I will be showing them at the next event at the Tailors Gallery http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Tailors-Gallery/189128744458409?v=info in Noveber and at South Hill Park in November http://www.facebook.com/pages/South-Hill-Park-Craft-Design-Fair/153535718017860

What do you think? Any feedback would be great, too big, too small? Or too weird. I am going to get some more pictures of the being modeled in the fullness of time.

Fading fast

I have been to the studio today for a few hours with a potent hangover and finished the pot that was commissioned. Didn't get to the studio till 6, spent the majority of my sunday lolling about at home. I will go in to fire it during the week. Hopefully I will be able to deliver it next weekend. Success!

My next task is to build up stock for the show in November. My first 'proper' show, I know nothing about getting my spot set up, what I will need. I should ring them really and ask for information. I haven't heard from them since they confirmed I could exhibit at the show. I will put that on my to do list.

In the pub now, just had sunday dinner (pizza) and still feeling the effects of that hangover. Slightly jaded today!

Signing off for this week, hopefully more to show and tell next week!

Commission

I have been working on a commission. Technically it is not my first commission, but it feels like it because all the other pieces I have done have been commissioned by friends. This one is for a stranger, someone I met at a show who liked my work.

Actually he was on the stall next to me and we worked next to each other for three days. We had time to discuss my work and after two days he decided to buy two Pieces. Not exactly hard sale by me, it took two days for him to develop a like strong enough for the work than meant he would part with his hard earned cash. And those pieces are quite expensive. Saying that I gave then to him half price because we were stall buddies! But still £100 is a fair whack of money.

I need to work on my selling skills. I can talk about other people's work more confidently than my own. And that is the crux of it. I am rubbish at discussing my work with out feeling like I am blowing my own trumpet! When I get to know people and build a relationship with them I can speak more earnestly. I kind of like that as well, not the quick sale, a slow honest sale, not the most profitable, but still it feels better.

The pictures show the first one I made for the commission, I wasn't entirely satisfied so I made another. He can choose which one he likes best!!

Back to school

Back to school this week, mixed feelings on that one. I am trying not to slip back into obscurity after pushing my work out there enthusiastically for the last 6 weeks.

I here by promise one blog a week to prevent my from being sucked into the black hole!

I have not finished the commission (yes i got s commission!) I started on Sunday, I will put up a pic next week when there is something to see.

This week I bring you the work of Heather Knight. I saw her on Etsy. I like it a lot. Here is her web site http://www.heatherknightceramics.com/ I have never met her so it's a freebee plug from the kindness of my heart...

Lovely though, isn't it!

From the mantel piece to the gallery wall

Back from our holiday in Greece at 8am, travelled all night. Managed to get my first year MA show up this afternoon. Success!

Shows Over

The show at the tailors gallery is completed. It was quits successful I made over £200 but I sold mainly to friends and other exhibitors, that could be understood in a variety of ways. Possibly the more you know about me the more you like my work. How that would work if I didn't meet people is unclear. Here are some pictures from the event ...

One of my new breed of pot, sold this one.

My earrings in use..,

Not a great picture. It looks dark and over crowded.

I am off to Greece in 1 hour! I have to set up my MA exhibition the day we get back, and back to school the following day! See you next week!

New family in colour...

The new family of bullet shapes in colour. Ok, something not quite satisfying about them. I just can't put my finger on what it is.

The glaze on this one is a bit molten and lumpy. Unintentional.

New Wall Hangings

Really happy with the new stuff I made! I think this is an important point, a ceramic epiphany!

Also have a look on my Flickr for more pictures.....

Upcoming Exhibition

I will be doing a show at the Tailor's gallery http://www.thetailorsgallery.co.uk/ on the 26, 27 and 28th, so I have been making jewellery that relates to the space at the Tailor's Gallery. It is run by Patrick Walsh a Tailor and Fashion Designer who has designed for Cheryl Cole and Robbie Williams. Not my cup of tea, but still pretty accomplished.

I have been posting on my twitter http://twitter.com/#!/AnneCastano

Please have a look at these if you fancy little updates and lots of pictures.

So heres what I have been doing......

Semi translucent window hangings, these have not been glazed or fired yet so I am yet to see if they will actually work. You can see the holes I have pierced through the clay.

Also some earrings, again in the early stages, I will post some more pictures when they are finished and have been glazed

Above is a vessel I made using my disc form, I have used porcelain paper clay, I have done this before and when I fired it up to 1280C it cracked and showed some of the stoneware pot underneath. It worked quite well, so I am hoping that this will work out, I really like the pot.

I will be back next week to let you know how it goes, and post some pictures, bye bye for now x
